Twenty Years Behind the Table

A career dealer on tipping, superstition, the players they remember and the ones they would rather not.

Nina Okafor11 min read

We sat down with a dealer who has worked the same pit, on and off, since 2006. We agreed to leave the property unnamed.

The thing that came up first was not money. It was noise — specifically, how much a dealer can tell about a table's night from how the noise changes.

On tipping: 'People think we remember the big tippers. We remember the polite ones. Those are different lists.'

On superstition: 'I do not believe in any of it, and I will still not say the number out loud. Both things are true.'

On the players they remember: 'The ones who knew when to leave. There are not many.'
