The Craziest Craps Roll We've Ever Seen
Forty-five minutes on one shooter, a table six deep, and a room that forgot how to be quiet.
It started the way these things always start — unremarkably. A Tuesday, a half-empty pit, a $10 table with three players and a dealer who looked like he wanted to be anywhere else.
Then a man in a windbreaker picked up the dice and did not put them down for forty-five minutes.
What makes a roll like that memorable is not the money. It is the way a room reorganises itself around it. By minute twelve there were people standing two rows back, holding drinks they had stopped drinking. By minute twenty the dealer had stopped making small talk. By minute thirty nobody was saying the word 'seven' out loud, because nobody says it out loud.
We have filmed a lot of tables. We have never filmed a room go that quiet.
He sevened out eventually. Everyone does. The windbreaker tipped the crew, said almost nothing, and walked toward the cashier with a rack of chips and the expression of a man who had simply had a nice evening.
That is the part we keep coming back to. The table does not care who you are, and then for forty-five minutes it does.
